Space, Time, and Opportunity: Cornell St. Studio Sponsor Shout-Out!

In 2007, when the whole “The Hudson Valley is the new Brooklyn” movement was just a twinkle in Williamsburg’s eye, the Darmstadt family (aware that cool things were already happening here and anticipating that more were in Kingston’s future) opened Cornell St. Studios in midtown Kingston.

It began when Ken Darmstadt established the second floor of his building as a multi-studio space to host exhibits and fitness classes. Now, with Ken’s daughter Renee at the helm, Cornell St. Studio rents out their unique private event space, plus holds everything from cooking classes to car shows, art shows to Zumba classes, a gift shop full of handmade and vintage items, and more!

The versatility of Cornell St. Studios’ 1000+ sq. ft. space makes its diverse uses possible—it’s unique, accommodating, bright and open, and uber-functional. So whether you need space for a Sweet 16 party, a paint-a-onsie baby shower, a Zumba bachelorette party, or a small intimate wedding ceremony, they can make that happen!

And where would Kingston be without the arts? The Darmstadts celebrate the plentitude of local artists and crafters of all walks, giving them opportunity and space to share their work. Don’t miss the paintings of local artist Estelle Tambak in November, and the holiday pop-up shop, featuring the work of local crafters and artists during December (see below)!

Wen there’s not an event going on, Cornell St. is far from unused. There are different fitness classes Monday through Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings to get you moving and keep you well—everything from boot camps to yoga, hula hooping to pilates. You should also keep an eye on their website www.cornellstreetstudios.com for additional event information.

We’re so happy to have Cornell St. Studios on board as a Hullabaloo sponsor this year! The Darmstadts share our vision of a thriving creative community in Kingston and are dedicated to providing space, time, and opportunity for everyone to participate, share, be well, and have fun.  Don’t miss these two upcoming events in the Main Gallery, and tell them Hullabaloo sent you!:

But what’s on your favorite potter or ceramicist’s wish list? Bailey Pottery Equipment and Ceramic Supplies can help you there!

Located on TenbroeckAvenue in Kingston, Bailey has been manufacturing innovative pottery and ceramics equipment for 36 years. They carry everything from the smallest tools to the biggest kilns, and all the materials and accessories to go with them… so whether the artist on your holiday list is just beginning or has been doing this for as long as the Bailey folks have, Bailey’s customer service staff can give you expert gift-buying advice and set them up with everything they need (that’s what they’ve been doing for studios and schools since the 70s!) Still can’t decide?  A Bailey gift certificate will be just right!

At Bailey, they can help you select the right equipment, tools, and medium to nurture your creative endeavor.  They’ve also got a fantastic selection of books and DVD’s to help you advance your skills and explore your chosen medium, and can recommend the right ones to get you throwing pots and firing ceramics in no time. They even offer lectures and workshops for a range of interests and skill levels.

This community of creatives is so lucky to have Bailey Pottery Equipment and Ceramic Supplies right here in the Hudson Valley, and Hullabaloo is so thankful to have their support! Anne and her company are active in many local initiatives, including the Midtown Arts District, and we’re thrilled to make them part of Hullabaloo this year!

So, if you know an artist, make their holiday a little artier with a gift from Bailey; if you ARE an artist, treat yourself! For those less artistically inclined, buy an awesome handmade bowl—that may likely have been made with something from Bailey’s…you’ll be shopping local twice over!

Stop, Drop, and Listen: A Shout-Out to The Heavy Light Show!

What do you get when you cross Blackalicious, Astronauts, Etc., Joe Jackson, Deerhunter, Dusty Springfield, Black Sabbath, the B-52s, English Beat, James Brown, and a whole lot of other amazing-but-seemingly-random stuff? The Heavy Light Show at its best!

Not familiar with Ida Hakkila’s radio show? It airs on WDST (Radio Woodstock, 100.1) on Saturday nights from 9 – 11 p.m. and you can also listen live online at http://radiowoodstock.com/ or after the fact at http://radiowoodstock.com/audio-on-demand. And you’re gonna want to REALLY LISTEN. Saturday night is the PERFECT slot for Ida—her enthusiasm about everything she plays and talks about is contagious, making it impossible to be in a bad mood while you’re listening. This is NOT morning-commute-music or rush-hour-music or even background noise. You’re going to want to stop what you’re doing and just listen. And maybe dance a little.

Ida’s had some pretty incredible gigs, including at big stations in NYC and as a musical consultant for David Letterman. And like so many cool people, here she is in the beautiful Hudson Valley! And we’re soooo glad.

Ida plays what she wants—and it’s all over the place—but somehow things just flow. It’s the perfect mix of indie rock, old-school hip hop, punk, soul, classic rock, 80s, brand-spakin’ new albums, and old favorites: Stuff you forgot about and stuff you want to remember.

And Hullabaloo veteran Will Lytle drew her logo, so you know she’s got good taste. Plus she loves Hullabaloo and Hullabaloo loves her, so listen up for shout-outs! (Woohoo! We’re on the radio!)

We want to thank Ida for her support and for livening up our Saturday nights. When you drop that request (yup, she takes those too!) on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/The-Heavy-Light-Show-116229585092030/timeline/ or Twitter (@IdaHakkila), tell her Hullabaloo says hey!
