Sponsor Shout-Out: New York States of Mind—Connecting, Curating, and Celebrating

Billy Joel may have been in a New York state of mind, but as our sponsor New York States of Mind, recognizes (by adding the appropriate “s”), this can mean so many different things in different parts of this diverse state—each of them as inspiring as the next!

New York States of Mind (www.newyorkstatesofmind.com) is a digital magazine and marketplace that celebrates this great state’s people, places, products, and ideas. You can explore the site by features (brilliantly organized into “Celebrate,” “Curate,” “Decorate,” “Epicurate,” “Recreate,” and “Innovate”) or by region (perfect for planning a weekend road trip or discovering something new in your own backyard), and each article is a revelation of must- see/do/eat/try/meets that the tourism websites don’t tell you about.

Fresh and authentic, NYSOM is true to their goal of using the magazine and marketplace to “highlight and share the stories that fulfill [them], drive [them] to action, and constitute the commonalities and differences—the states of mind that collectively make us who we are and which, in turn make New York a unique conglomerate and arbiter of distinction.” Their content is driven by what compels them, not what gets clicks…and it shows!—Recent articles have covered everything from the most interesting places to study, to “Meet the Maker” features introducing artisanal food purveyors, from stories on food in our local schools, to entrepreneurs bringing innovative businesses to the Empire state, all in a celebratory style not typically found in today’s media. And it’s this quiet enthusiasm and sophisticated New York pride that ties these seemingly random topics together, and, as they describe “celebrates our parallel lives, draw connections in the unlikeliest places, and remove the guess work from your next adventure.”

Now, we know you want to hear about that Marketplace…New York States of Mind promote New York-based brands and believe that “the ideal product is as holistically ‘New York’ as possible: crafted by a New Yorker, made from grown or otherwise made-in-New York materials, and with a New York-focused point of inspiration.” Think Brooklyn-made dog carrier totes, Saratoga-chic handwoven neckties, and chocolate maple drink mixes for that weekend in the ADK’s, as just a few examples. And don’t forget the cool NYS-shaped table! It’s a great place for gifts for yourself and those on your holiday list. Shipping is included on all orders, and you get a 20% discount on your first order when you register!  Are you a vendor based in New York, and you’d like to be considered for the Marketplace? Email marketplace@NewYorkStatesofMind.com, and tell them Hullabaloo sent you!

We’d like to thank NYSOM—a digital publication that shares so much of our sentiment for this region—for their support of this year’s Hullabaloo! Read the magazine at www.newyorkstatesofmind.com and find them on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube—don’t forget the “s”). After reading all those great articles, we’re in a New York state of mind ourselves…road trip, anyone?

Sponsor Shout-Out: “Walking the Line” with One Mile Gallery

What’s the difference between “art” and “craft”? This question can sometimes puzzle creative individuals—sometimes the line between the two is a fine one. Some sources define “art” as a form of work that expresses emotions or ideas, while “craft” is often defined as a skilled work that involves the application of a technique.  To some, “craft” has taken on a negative connotation, while the word “art” is sometimes misinterpreted as pretentious. Words like “artisanal,” and “maker” struggle to balance on the invisible line.

We believe that the separation is less cut-and-dry, and would assume that many of our vendors (especially the ones who hold fine arts degrees) would agree! We’ve seen some pretty big ideas and genuine emotion expressed by our “craft fair” vendors, using advanced skills and techniques…and we’ve seen some art work utilizing masterful techniques and expert skills with the artist’s medium.  Regardless of how you categorize a piece of work, we believe that things of beauty should be accessible to all in whatever forms they enjoy them, and that “fine art” and well-made “functional” or “decorative” handcrafted goods can co-exist peacefully.

That’s why the support of One Mile Gallery means so much to us: we really appreciate that a fine art gallery agrees with us that all types of creative endeavors—whether “fine art,” “craft,” or something in between—are valid and deserve an outlet, and that all creatives deserve an opportunity to share their work. And we’re SO glad that One Mile is there to provide this opportunity to so many amazing established and emerging fine artists, both local and worldwide.

One Mile Gallery is housed in one of the few remaining 18th century buildings in the historic Rondout district of Kingston, at 475 Abeel Street.  They’re open on Saturdays from noon until 5:00, as well as by appointment and for openings and special events. They showcase the works of painters, photographers, sculptors, mixed media artists and more, in regularly-changing exhibitions. We’re pretty psyched for “Greenhouse,” an exhibit that opens on October 17th and is on view until November 14th. This show features over 20 artists and all the work focuses on plant life. As the last of the leaves fall from the trees and winter sets in, a little plant life sounds like just the thing to remind us that spring will once again bloom. It’ll be the perfect way to spend a chilly Saturday!

One Mile also has an online shop (http://onemilegallery.com/shop), perfect for finding gifts for the fine art lover on your shopping list. Select from available work offered by past exhibiting artists, ranging from quirky illustrations to subversive paintings.

We want to thank One Mile Gallery for their support and for sharing our vision of a peaceable kingdom where “art” and “craft” comingle on hand-drawn blurred lines! Thank you for putting the “fine arty” in our party!

Space, Time, and Opportunity: Cornell St. Studio Sponsor Shout-Out!

In 2007, when the whole “The Hudson Valley is the new Brooklyn” movement was just a twinkle in Williamsburg’s eye, the Darmstadt family (aware that cool things were already happening here and anticipating that more were in Kingston’s future) opened Cornell St. Studios in midtown Kingston.

It began when Ken Darmstadt established the second floor of his building as a multi-studio space to host exhibits and fitness classes. Now, with Ken’s daughter Renee at the helm, Cornell St. Studio rents out their unique private event space, plus holds everything from cooking classes to car shows, art shows to Zumba classes, a gift shop full of handmade and vintage items, and more!

The versatility of Cornell St. Studios’ 1000+ sq. ft. space makes its diverse uses possible—it’s unique, accommodating, bright and open, and uber-functional. So whether you need space for a Sweet 16 party, a paint-a-onsie baby shower, a Zumba bachelorette party, or a small intimate wedding ceremony, they can make that happen!

And where would Kingston be without the arts? The Darmstadts celebrate the plentitude of local artists and crafters of all walks, giving them opportunity and space to share their work. Don’t miss the paintings of local artist Estelle Tambak in November, and the holiday pop-up shop, featuring the work of local crafters and artists during December (see below)!

Wen there’s not an event going on, Cornell St. is far from unused. There are different fitness classes Monday through Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings to get you moving and keep you well—everything from boot camps to yoga, hula hooping to pilates. You should also keep an eye on their website www.cornellstreetstudios.com for additional event information.

We’re so happy to have Cornell St. Studios on board as a Hullabaloo sponsor this year! The Darmstadts share our vision of a thriving creative community in Kingston and are dedicated to providing space, time, and opportunity for everyone to participate, share, be well, and have fun.  Don’t miss these two upcoming events in the Main Gallery, and tell them Hullabaloo sent you!:
