Vendor Feature: Lu Mabey Jewelry, Leggett Fine Furniture, Richard A. Smith Photography, and Meerwiibli by Sarah-Maria

You might want to work yourself into your holiday budget—you’ve been super good this year! Don’t say we didn’t give you fair warning, because there are going to be a lot of things at Hullabaloo that you’ll have a hard time leaving behind.  It’s okay to shop for yourself, trust us. And if you just feel too guilty, be sure to make your wish list for your loved ones—Hullabaloo IS a two-day event—they can go back without you!  Meet four vendors whose work you’ll want to bring home for yourself….Stop at their tables and treat yourself! (And of course, their work makes great gifts too!)

Lu Mabey Jewelry, Port Ewen, NY

Lu handcrafts gorgeous jewelry from 18 kt. and 14 kt. yellow gold and sterling silver, using pearls and gemstones as show-stopping focal points. Her work is delicate and simple, yet it has a real presence that won’t go unnoticed…Wear her crystal points post earrings, beautifully set pearl rings, or petite labradorite necklace on sterling chain and just wait for the compliments to start pouring in! Jewelry is always a great gift and Lu’s jewelry has diverse appeal because its timeless elegance makes it easy for anyone to wear any time—from desk to dinner, grocery store to holiday gala. We’re so pleased that Lu is joining us at Hullabaloo for the first time this year! Stop by, say hello, and pick up something for someone’s stocking!

Leggett Fine Furniture, Woodstock, NY

With contemporary designs informed by his interest in the history of furniture, Mike Leggett uses exquisite materials and great attention to detail to build his furniture and new small offerings in his Woodstock studio. Mike worked in major museums and auction houses and, while his style is distinctly modern with clean, elegant lines, his appreciation of traditional craftsmanship and historical design elements is apparent in the quality and detail of his work. At his first Hullabaloo, he’ll be offering his new line of small furniture and accessories, like hand-carved bowls, lamps, stools, and small tables. His pieces make great gifts for anyone who appreciates precise craftsmanship and timeless design. Did you sit for a portrait with Tom Delooza? Mike will also have frames that fit Tom Delooza’s wet-plate collodion portraits, so your portrait gift will make the perfect presentation!

Richard A. Smith Photography

We’re thrilled to have Richard A. Smith and his beautiful, engaging photos with us at Hullabaloo for the first time! Richard has been a professional photographer for twenty years, and has been fortunate enough to travel the world taking pictures and exhibiting his work in the US and abroad. He’s lived in London and New York, but after 15 years of city living he’s enjoying being a Hudson Valley resident, finding that our beautiful region is a constant source of inspiration and transformation. His move here provided a welcomed opportunity to return to landscape photography, and his current work focuses on the materials of the landscape and the people that live and work with them, showcasing the sublime (incredible vistas and nature shots that you just want to step into) and the incongruous (a torch-like shot of flame interrupting an otherwise peaceful brilliant blue sky). We’re lucky to call this majestic region home, but sometimes we need a photographer’s eye to capture the awe of what’s around us! Who wouldn’t appreciate a glimpse of that vision this holiday season?

Meerwiibli by Sarah-Maria, Kingston, NY

Created from her own designs and hand-sewn with great attention to detail, Sarah-Maria’s clothing and accessories feature colorful prints, touchable textures, and unique, exquisite details. Her eclectic pieces are truly special—when you buy one of her creations, you can be sure you won’t have a twinsy at the office! Each design is playful yet classy—often inspired by vintage cuts and prints, which she redesigns with a modern edginess.  All her pieces are flattering and comfortable, making them easy to wear too! Meerwiibli was with us for our first Hullabaloo in 2013, and we missed her last year! We’re so glad she’ll be back with all her stylish, flawlessly crafted clothing this year! Unlike those mall store finds, her pieces make special gift that will be worn for many seasons to come—and you won’t find the recipient under a “Who Wore it Best?” headline either! (Shopping for yourself is totally ok too!)

Sponsor shout-out

Sponsor Shout-Out: Chronogram…More than just “some” joy!

Editor Brian Mahoney describes artist Giselle Potter’s illustration on the cover of this month’s Chronogram as “winsome,” going on to break down the etymology of the word (“Old English: wynsum, from wyn ‘joy’ + some”).  He explains that this more literal translation better suits the work than the modern definition of the word (“something lightweight, or lacking seriousness”). Funny how that interpretation so perfectly applies to Chronogram as well!

Arguably, Chronogram IS lightweight (it’s easy to carry!), and is in spots, lacking seriousness (or its just seriously funny)—however, it’s also anything but fluff and triviality…In fact, we find it the perfect mix of entertainment and insight. The website and printed magazine are both chock-full of great photos, and their articles on local businesses, people, places, events, issues, and general goings-on keep us informed and in-the-know. They’ve done numerous stories on local artists, craftspeople, and designers and the local makers’ movement and have been the voice of the Hudson Valley since before other places were talking about us!

Have you signed up for their 8-Day Week newsletter yet? Because you should: http://www.chronogram.com/hudsonvalley/8DWSignUp/Page. It’ll keep you in the loop about great events (like ours, and ones the Chronogram throws, like their super fun Block Party!). And be sure to check the website (www.chronogram.com) regularly for new content and calendar listings (and VERY accurate horoscopes). They also host a web show Hudson Valley Art Scene Web TV—check it out and meet some makers!

Still love the feel of a good old-fashioned magazine in your hands? We sure do! Pick up a copy of Chronogram at your favorite local establishment (or at Hullabaloo!). With covers featuring “winsome” art and gorgeous photos, you’ll have a hard time recycling them. But no need—they’re useful as directories, too, listing all the businesses you should know about.

We’ve got more than a little joy about the Chronogram’s continued support of Hullabaloo! Thanks, Chronogram, for being part of the party!

vendors

Vendor Feature: Liz Clark Jewelry, Virginia Piazza Pottery, The Hudson Standard, and Matt Pleva

This bunch of fantastic Hullabaloo vendors includes the award-winner for the furthest drive to Hullabaloo (if there was such an award), a third year Hullabaloo veteran, a Hullabaloo newbie, and a hometown favorite!  They should all be able to help you knock a few more gifts off your holiday list, so learn a little more about them and click on their links to start getting some ideas!

Liz Clark Jewelry, Providence, RI

In her metal studio in Providence, RI, Liz uses floral and geometric elements with simple lines and silhouettes to create a subtle-but-striking collection of earrings, necklaces, rings, and brooches. Her work has a sculptural feel, yet her pieces are delicate, unobtrusive, and comfortable to wear. The organic elements of her work lend a classic feel and timeless elegance to balance the modern edge of the shapes and materials used in her unique jewelry.  Whether you’re looking want an un-fussy brooch for a classy lady on your list, a unique statement necklace for New Year’s, or a gorgeous pair of studs for a trendy teen, Liz has the perfect piece! It’s her first Hullabaloo and she’s making a long drive to join us, so give her a warm welcome!

Virginia Piazza Pottery, Beacon, NY

As soon as Virginia started working with clay, she knew it was her medium! After experimenting with different firing techniques and types of pieces, Virginia now focuses on functional ware, mostly with porcelain in a limited glaze palette; lately, though, she’s been incorporating some neat embellishments. Her work is clean, simple, and charmingly understated, with a muted color palette and comforting, functional shapes. Her mission is to make work that speaks to the user and finds a special place in their everyday life. Virginia’s work somehow feels both familiar and completely fresh, bringing to mind breakfasts on summer porches and cool nights spent in warm places!  Her bowls, mugs, vases, pots, sugar bowls, nesting bowls, berry bowls, and serving dishes make great gifts for so many occasions. Virginia has been with us from the beginning, so please join us in welcoming her back to Hullabaloo!

The Hudson Standard, Hudson, NY

Using traditional processes that date back to colonial times, The Hudson Standard hand-crafts cocktail bitters and shrubs (deliciously tart syrups made of fruit, spices, vinegar, and sweetener) that are creating delicious cocktails, sodas, foods, and sauces in top-notch regional restaurants and in homes nationwide. Their products highlight the flavors of the Hudson Valley (think Apple Coriander Maple Shrub and Spruce Shooter Bitters, for starters) and work with NYS farms to source the best ingredients. Doesn’t a nice fall cocktail (like the Pear Honey Ginger Shrub with rum, gin, or bourbon!) with Thanksgiving dinner sound like a good idea? Stop by The Hudson Standard’s table at their first Hullabaloo and pick up some of their products for the home bartender or chef on your list...and some for yourself!

Matt Pleva, Kingston, NY

If Matt Pleva’s intricate work looks familiar, it’s because he was one of the muralists whose work was part of the O+ Festival last year!  On a smaller scale (pretty small, actually) he creates these incredible dioramas, illustrations, and miniature pen and ink drawings, and turns them into wearable art (buttons, earrings, pendants) and display pieces. He takes his inspiration from his vast range of interests including history and pop culture—so you’ll find tiny scenes from Dr. Who, Monty Python, Office Space, Star Trek, The Wizard of Oz and more, as well as historical “reenactments” in pen and ink! He also offers a large selection of prints, cards, and postcards.  Have a favorite movie moment you’d like him to recreate in paper? He does commissions! Stop by Matt’s table at his first Hullabaloo and check out his work—he’s got a piece for every type of enthusiast—and if you don’t see your favorite, he can probably make it for you!
