Vendor Feature: Troy Cloth & Paper, Tidy Thyme, Vernacular Design, and Thorneater Comics

There’s not much these four vendors have in common—besides their sheer awesomeness! We’re so excited to have Troy Cloth & Paper, Thorneater Comics, and Vernacular Design back for this year’s Hullabaloo, and we’re psyched to welcome Tidy Thyme to the event for the first time! Whether you need a kale t-shirt for a veggie-loving friend, want to make cleaning your home a healthier process, need a beautiful cutting board or a gorgeous custom table, or want some reading material to transport you to a mythical, magical forest, Hullabaloo can help you out! Troy Cloth & Paper, Troy, NY

Taylor is the founder and principal artist of Troy Cloth & Paper, a brick and mortar retail store and screen-printing shop in Downtown Troy. They print for a bunch of clients there (you can go watch!), offer workshops (learn to print your own t-shirt!), plus have a great selection of their products in stock.  While many of their signature items express their Troy pride, other greeting cards, art prints, t-shirts, and accessories feature clever quips, witty one-liners, and fun messages.  Got a newly-vegetarian friend? The “#Kaled it!” t-shirt will make them forget bacon for a bit. Besides cards for every occasion, “You’re my favorite person (besides Neil deGrasse Tyson),” “I love you in ways no emoji can express,” and “I’m sorry your team is terrible” are just a few messages worth sending the old fashioned way! Need something cool to hang in the kitchen? They’ve got tons of food-inspired prints! This is Troy Cloth & Paper’s second Hullabaloo, and we’re thrilled to have them…so help us welcome them back! 

Tidy Thyme, Altamont, NY

Did you know that many of the products marketed as “green” are still full of super-scary junk? After losing someone special to cancer, Michelle, who has her own cleaning business, started doing some research and what she found was alarming. She started Tidy Thyme to make cleaning safer (and, dare we say, more enjoyable) for herself and her clients. Now she not only cleans houses using her own green products (Green Genies), she also offers her line of plant-based cleaning and home products at select markets! Her products are free of ammonia, chlorine, dyes, synthetic fragrances, animal testing, animal products/by-products, and a bunch of other chemicals I couldn’t spell, which are frequently used in common household products.  Got an oven that needs more than just elbow grease before the turkey goes in? Try Tidy Thyme’s scrubbing powder! Need to wipe away the dust before the holiday guests arrive? Try her dusting spray! She’s even got a yoga mat cleaner, candles, room and linen sprays, and more! All of them are incredibly effective and smell AMAZING! They’re even packaged so prettily that they make great gifts (have you ever tried wrapping up a bottle of Clorox? Not the same effect)! Know what else she does that’s awesome? Works with a non-profit to provide green cleaning services at no charge to families affected by cancer. Vernacular Design, Kingston, NY

Jack grew up in the Hudson Valley and developed a deep appreciation for historic architecture and fine craftsmanship. He went on to study design principles, patterns, and tools, later applying this knowledge to renovate historic homes (think moulding, custom stairs, mantlepieces, and much much more) and design and make custom furniture (everything from custom cabinetry to dining chairs) with expert skills and meticulous attention to detail.  In addition to his furniture and restoration work, Jack makes small pieces and giftable homewares—like beautiful cutting boards, knife blocks, wooden vases, and other home accessories—with the same respect for materials, traditional processes, and timeless design elements. We’ve been eyeing his knife block since the last Hullabaloo! We also hear that Jack is building a dining room table that he may use in his display at Hullabaloo, so if you’re interested in bigger, custom pieces, check out an example in the flesh!  This is Jack’s second Hullabaloo (you may remember him from the Freeman’s article on Hullabaloo in the Preview last year) so stop by and welcome him back!

Thorneater Comics, West Hurley, NY

Seriously, how cool is Will? Remember last year when he did $1 portraits at Hullabaloo? While we hate to disappoint you, we’re going to try to let you down easy…Will is most likely going to be out of the country (because his work is a huge deal in France now!) during Hullabaloo, so no $1 portraits this year (sad face)….However, he’s got a buddy covering his table so that you can get his drawings, books, t-shirts, and other merch at Hullabaloo anyway (we only had to beg a little; luckily, he’s a super nice guy.) If you don’t know Will, he’s a local illustrator whose comics appears weekly in The Woodstock Times and The Saugerties Times.  Then he binds them up (often by hand!) when the series is done, and sells them as books or limited edition boxed sets. He’ll also have his illustrations, t-shirts, and other products, including prints of that amazing map of the Catskills that he did for Almanac recently. His work is eerily charming, full of secrets and surprises, mythical magical woodland creatures, and the people who stumble upon them (usually when they’re most in need of guidance). His work is whimsical but hip, delightful and intriguing, insightful and endearing… We can’t wait to pick out a few more prints for ourselves! This is Will’s second Hullabaloo and we bet you can’t wait to see him again!

Vendor Feature: SO Handmade, Grok Enterprises, Kitta, and The Shayski Shop

You can cross a few more hard-to-buy for people off your shopping list! Messy kids (and the parentswho clean up after them)? Gotcha. Vegans with a sweet tooth? Covered. Cat lovers, old and young? Yessiree. Your quirky, quick-witted friend? Check. Meet four more Hullabaloo vendors who can help you out! 

SO Handmade, Woodstock, NY

Sarah uses her experience as a textile designer and sewing enthusiast to design and make stylish and practical products for homes and families. Designed, sewn, embellished, and screen-printed by Sarah herself, her designs are whimsical and stylish, and her products are SO innovative!  Her playmat? Genius! It’s got a hole in the center so all you have to do to clean up is gather the corners and hold it over the Lego container. Need to bring six Matchbox cars wherever you go for instant entertainment? Sarah’s got a rolling pouch with room for six cars and a racetrack on the back! She’s also got handmade fabric books, crayon rolls, beautiful tree skirts, and whimsical fabric ornaments too! With great gifts for so many people (of so many ages), we’re sure Sarah’s first Hullabaloo will be a successful one!

Grok Enterprises, New Paltz, NY

“Grok” is a transitive verb meaning “to understand profoundly and intuitively” that was originally used in the novel “Stranger in a Strange Land.” It’s an appropriate name for Peter and Heidi’s business—because they so completely understand the need for nutritious snacks that taste good. Knowing that celery sticks and carrots just don’t satisfy a sweet tooth, but that the sugary snacks we’re all too quick to grab aren’t doing us any nutritional favors, they created their low-calorie, no-sugar added, energy-boosting snacks from raw natural fruits and nuts, and other yummy superfood ingredients (like natural cacao). The result? Affordable AND adorable, they’re irresistible to kids and adults alike—need a gift for the “crazy cat lady” at the office? A Secret Santa gift for the kids’ class party? Done and done! There are so many sizes, patterns, and colors (both realistic and fantasy-cat markings—like clouds and camouflage) and you can even buy a kit and stuff your own!  Buy a whole family of Kittas and display them on your mantle during the holidays…or let the kids pick out one for their good behavior while you shop. Kittas are friendly, versatile critters that feel at home just about anywhere…Elizabeth is from right here in Kingston, but this is her first Hullabaloo so be sure to meet her and her “kittas”!

The Shayski Shop, Kingston, NY

By day, Shay is an animator and designer at the American Museum of Natural History. But in his free time, he designs fresh, funny graphics that he prints on super soft t-shirts. His designs are inspired by retro- and pop-culture, cool stuff, geeky things, favorite foods, and portmanteaus (combining two things—like, imagine Chewbacca and Fozzy Bear had a baby, and it’s Shayski’s Chewockawocka character).  Some of his shirts are part inside-joke (like the Murphy Mets mustache shirt only baseball fans will appreciate), part jabs at pop and mainstream culture (his “Kanye East” is incredibly modest), while there are others with wider appeal (what kind of person can’t appreciate a “hell yes” ice cream shirt?!?! Who wouldn’t laugh at the site of an “underwearwolf” in polka dotted panties?!?!) With both men’s and women’s sizes, you’re sure to find the perfect gift for someone with a quirky sense of humor or just an enthusiasm for ice cream. This is Shay’s first Hullabaloo, so please join us in welcoming him! 

Vendor Feature: Liz Clark Jewelry, Virginia Piazza Pottery, The Hudson Standard, and Matt Pleva

This bunch of fantastic Hullabaloo vendors includes the award-winner for the furthest drive to Hullabaloo (if there was such an award), a third year Hullabaloo veteran, a Hullabaloo newbie, and a hometown favorite!  They should all be able to help you knock a few more gifts off your holiday list, so learn a little more about them and click on their links to start getting some ideas!

Liz Clark Jewelry, Providence, RI

In her metal studio in Providence, RI, Liz uses floral and geometric elements with simple lines and silhouettes to create a subtle-but-striking collection of earrings, necklaces, rings, and brooches. Her work has a sculptural feel, yet her pieces are delicate, unobtrusive, and comfortable to wear. The organic elements of her work lend a classic feel and timeless elegance to balance the modern edge of the shapes and materials used in her unique jewelry.  Whether you’re looking want an un-fussy brooch for a classy lady on your list, a unique statement necklace for New Year’s, or a gorgeous pair of studs for a trendy teen, Liz has the perfect piece! Virginia Piazza Pottery, Beacon, NY

As soon as Virginia started working with clay, she knew it was her medium! After experimenting with different firing techniques and types of pieces, Virginia now focuses on functional ware, mostly with porcelain in a limited glaze palette; lately, though, she’s been incorporating some neat embellishments. Her work is clean, simple, and charmingly understated, with a muted color palette and comforting, functional shapes. Her mission is to make work that speaks to the user and finds a special place in their everyday life. Virginia’s work somehow feels both familiar and completely fresh, bringing to mind breakfasts on summer porches and cool nights spent in warm places!  Her bowls, mugs, vases, pots, sugar bowls, nesting bowls, berry bowls, and serving dishes make great gifts for so many occasions. Virginia has been with us from the beginning, so please join us in welcoming her back to Hullabaloo!

The Hudson Standard, Hudson, NY

Using traditional processes that date back to colonial times, The Hudson Standard hand-crafts cocktail bitters and shrubs (deliciously tart syrups made of fruit, spices, vinegar, and sweetener) that are creating delicious cocktails, sodas, foods, and sauces in top-notch regional restaurants and in homes nationwide. Their products highlight the flavors of the Hudson Valley (think Apple Coriander Maple Shrub and Spruce Shooter Bitters, for starters) and work with NYS farms to source the best ingredients. Doesn’t a nice fall cocktail (like the Pear Honey Ginger Shrub with rum, gin, or bourbon!) with Thanksgiving dinner sound like a good idea? Stop by The Hudson Standard’s table at their first Hullabaloo and pick up some of their products for the home bartender or chef on your list...and some for yourself!

Matt Pleva, Kingston, NY

If Matt Pleva’s intricate work looks familiar, it’s because he was one of the muralists whose work was part of the O+ Festival last year!  On a smaller scale (pretty small, actually) he creates these incredible dioramas, illustrations, and miniature pen and ink drawings, and turns them into wearable art (buttons, earrings, pendants) and display pieces. He takes his inspiration from his vast range of interests including history and pop culture—so you’ll find tiny scenes from Dr. Who, Monty Python, Office Space, Star Trek, The Wizard of Oz and more, as well as historical “reenactments” in pen and ink! He also offers a large selection of prints, cards, and postcards.  Have a favorite movie moment you’d like him to recreate in paper? He does commissions!
