DJ Mr. Chips: Adding Funk to the Festivities at Hullabaloo 2015!

It wouldn’t be a party without music and though Danielle is known for her super-fresh playlists, she’ll be busy running the show during Hullabaloo!

With that in mind from the start, we went to our favorite professional: He’s lauded around town as the guy who does the classic hip-hop dance parties at The Anchor and other local watering holes, but you might also know him as Hullabaloo’s official DJ—Andrew Nelson, aka DJ Mr. Chips. We’re pleased to announce that he’ll be back at it, spinning at Hullabaloo as he has since the beginning!

DJ Mr. Chips not only has a talent for creating some pretty sick mash-ups (someone on social media once reminisced about his at-Hullabaloo mash-up of Led Zeppelin with the theme from Star Wars), he’s also got impeccable taste in old school hip-hop, funk, soul, indie rock, and holiday tunes you’re NOT sick of hearing…all of which will come together to form the perfect shopping soundtrack!

But perhaps you haven’t noticed this under-appreciated talent (case in point): He’s also got a knack for keeping the music at juuuussstttt the right level (as in, you’ll want to bust a move, but you’ll be able to talk to the artist about the one-of-a-kind gift you’re buying). What a guy!

Old-School Instagram: Tom DeLooza’s While-You-Wait Wet-Plate Collodion Portraits

One of our favorite day-after-Hullabaloo activities is searching for the #hvhullabaloo hashtag on social media and seeing our awesome vendors’ and shoppers’ photos from the event. Last year, tons of people were posting photos of their photos by Tom DeLooza—and getting lots of likes and comments! But unlike most in your newsfeed, these pictures are special because of sooooo much more than an Instagram filter...

Inspired by his “internal mad scientist” and a lifelong fascination with building things, Tom takes your portrait WITH CAMERAS HE BUILT, and uses a mid-19th century technique called wet-plate collodion to send you home with a hauntingly beautiful keepsake.  One of the oldest forms of photography, this technique takes its name from the fact that the image plate has to be coated, sensitized, exposed, and developed all while the chemistry is still wet. While this means that Tom is burdened with a lot of equipment, chemicals, and materials, he’s perfectly willing to lug all this around to provide you with a unique souvenir of Hullabaloo (or an amazing gift if you can bear to part with it!) in a matter of minutes.

Tom’s portraits are uncanny—leaving you with a curious feeling that you’re looking at yourself as your own ancestor…Yet, while the portraits look antique, there’s a modern sensibility and a quirky edginess too—past colliding with present in a delightfully confusing way.  His work has been seen in numerous galleries, displays, and exhibitions and he shoots everything from still lives to wedding portraits using this fascinating process; he also does workshops, tutorials, and equipment conversion. We’re psyched to have Tom back at Hullabaloo to offer his tangible, heirloom pieces in this digital age…and at a special rate:  $40 per plate, one plate per session. Want to be photographed with your favorite stuffed animal? Reading your favorite book? Wearing an antelope mask? He encourages you to wear costumes and bring props and favorite treasures, so get creative! He’ll also have gift certificates available (how about a session for your favorite couple!).

They may look like way-latergrams, but these awesome pieces are more timeless than any app. We can’t wait to see yours!

Well-rested and ready to give everyone the proper thanks they deserve…Here it goes:

We had an amazing weekend, and on all accounts, so did everyone else, with many vendors reporting their highest sales EVER happening at Hullabaloo! We had about 1,800 people shop Hullabaloo this weekend—they came from near and far (as far as NJ, CT, Brooklyn, and beyond)… they made the choice to spend their money with our amazing designers, artists, craftspeople, makers, and food purveyors (rather than at the malls or online)…they RAVED about the quality of our vendors, the organization of the event, and the great time they were having. The response from the community and the local and regional media was overwhelming. We are bursting with excitement, appreciation, and love for every single one of you who helped us make this event truly unique, and hugely successful.

·       Peter Demuth Photography – Thank you for running the photo booth with both amazing photography skills and tireless enthusiasm. You even got my (Courtney's) Dad to put on a paper crown, hold up a fake bowtie, and act like a goof in public.

You “old-schooled” a large chunk of the Hudson Valley population, and your work this weekend totally kicked the 21st Century’s ass.

·       DJ Mr. Chips – Seriously, dude. Best event DJ EVER. You not only found the right balance between making Hullabaloo an awesome party and making conversation/transactions audible, you played a seriously dope mix of music.

·       Will Lytle of Thorneater Comics – What can you even say about Will? This guy must’ve drawn a million amazing $1 portraits this weekend, with a smile on his face and complete disregard for any hand cramps he may have been suffering. One of the warmest, most genuine people around, I think. He and Anna together can rule the world.

·       Nixie Sparrow – We can relate to these two lovely ladies with a new and awesome arts-related business. Their DIY gift wrap table was SO MUCH FUN for kids and adults alike and we appreciate their sponsorship and support SO MUCH. Their DIY space in Beacon? It’s gonna be HUGE! Check it out!

·       Volunteers – We are so fortunate to have amazing families and friends who helped out in ways…I was about to say “big and small,” but that wouldn’t be accurate: Everyone went WAY above and WAY beyond…there were no small favors involved. Whether you put up tables, made decorations, worked the welcome table, or just were patient with us when we may not have been our usual cheerful selves, we could not have done this without you. There are too many people to name here, but they know who they are, and our hearts are full with appreciation. THANK YOU!

·       Sponsors – OMG, how lucky are we? On a personal note: When Danielle first started talking about shaking up the Kingston area craft fair scene, I said I wanted to help out and get involved. These talks began at a mixer for a small business group we’d both just joined as new business owners and I thought maybe I’d write a couple of press releases or some website copy. Little did I know just how involved I’d get, or that it would become such a “thing”…I definitely did not anticipate that, of all the cool stuff I’ve worked on, it would become one of the things I’m most proud of. I also didn’t know just how much our fast-growing friendship would come to mean to me. I’m lucky to call her (and her super-cool husband Joe!) one of my very best friends, as well as my partner in this crazy thing we’re doing…
